Sharminee first came to acupuncture while working as a medical writer. Researching a feature on back pain, she became interested in this traditional healing art which eventually led to a three-year course of study at the London College of Traditional Acupuncture. Her training was followed by clinical practice in the Hangzou TCM Hospital in the Zheijang province of China, where she was able to expand her experience of traditional Chinese medicine.
She has been in clinical practice since 2003 and works in an integrated manner, which considers western diagnosis alongside a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) approach to acupuncture.
Sharminee’s main area of clinical practice is in the field of women’s health, pregnancy and fertility. She worked at the IVF unit at the Hammersmith Hospital from 2009 to 2011.
Sharminee feels passionate about how acupuncture can support women through a number of gynaecological and obstetric conditions. She has considerable experience in providing acupuncture for IVF assistance and other forms of assisted conception. She also treats morning sickness, pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy, and uses acupuncture for breech presentation correction and induction of labour. She also offers courses of treatment for preconception care and other women’s health conditions like PMS, menstrual migraine, painful periods and menopausal symptoms.
Sharminee also works as a general acupuncturist treating a range of musculoskeletal and pain conditions and stress-related problems. She has used these skills in treating the health problems of musicians and other performers. She has attended training from the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine and works alongside the medical team which supports the orchestral musicians of the Southbank Sinfonia.
Sharminee practices qi gong and tai chi and is a student of Southbank University’s Confucius Institute, where she is learning Mandarin. She is a member of the British Acupuncture Council, the UK’s largest professional/ self-regulatory body for the practice of traditional acupuncture.
